Introducing SnapMaps

As you will no doubt be aware, SnapChat is used regularly by many children and young people, and has recently launched a new feature. The feature, known as SnapMaps, allows users to see the location of their contacts. This enables others to accurately pinpoint where you are and as such has potential safeguarding concerns.

If your child uses SnapChat, we respectfully urge parents and carers to discuss and investigate the privacy settings that your child is using within the app.

There are three possible privacy settings:

· Ghost mode, where only you can see your position;

· My Friends mode, where any contact can see your location; and

· Select Friends mode, just those who you choose can see you

Sharing location can be a risky thing to do and due to this ChildNet have posted a thorough explanation of SnapMaps and how to ensure users stay safe. We recommend reading this, and to share with anyone you know who uses the app.
