THINK! Keeping young people safe online

Digital Citizenship. Being safe whilst online. Being mindful of the dangers that are out there. These things are important to our students and so the digital leaders have created this video asking young people to THINK before they do anything online.

Parent iPad support session opportunity

Designed to help parents to understand their family’s iPad a little better, this session will be made up of two parts:

Firstly, a presentation by our Apple experts answering some of the more common questions from parents, including how to set up Parental Controls.

This will be followed by a more informal opportunity for you to speak to an expert one-to-one and get help with any queries that you may have about setting up and using the iPad.

The session will run on Thursday, April 11th, 2013.

Get on the case! Changing your iPad Case and Staying Insured

Changing your iPad Case and Staying Insured

iPads purchased under the school scheme are all delivered with a black Moko Maroo case to keep
the iPad in. It is perfectly acceptable to replace this case, but the new case must meet the following
requirements in order that the device remains covered by the insurance policy:

“In respect of iPads, protection by a suitable protective case that meets the following criteria: a stiff,
protective case that is semi-permanently attached to the device and protecting each corner of the
iPad, whilst giving unencumbered access to all the ports, and including a screen cover that can be
folded over the screen when not in use. This applies at all times including when the iPad is in use.

Unsuitable covers are slip-on/off cases, or cases without a screen cover. Magnetic screen covers are
not preferred, due to the limited nature of the protection provided, but are acceptable.”

The next page summarises these requirements into 3 simple rules.

If you’d prefer more guidance, below are some examples of cases which ARE covered under the
insurance policy. These are all readily available to buy online and cover a broad price range.

  • Belkin – Pro Color Duo Tri-Fold Folio with Stand
  • Griffin – IntelliCase
  • Griffin – Survivor Case
  • Incipio – Lexington Folio Case
  • Incipio – Slim Kickstand Folio Case
  • Maroo – Moko Case
  • OtterBox – Defender Series
  • 360 Degree Rotating Case for iPad 2 3 & iPad 4

This list just provides a few examples of what is covered. They can all be found on websites such
as Amazon or Ebay.

Esafety & in-app purchases

Thanks to the many parents who have attended the various ‘Meet Your iPad’ sessions. If you haven’t been able to come and would still like to attend, please let us know and we can organise more.

One of the areas covered on the evenings was on the topic of in-app purchases, what they are and how parental controls can restrict them among other things. The video below from June last year shows how you can set up restrictions, in particular, turning off the in-app purchases.

This local news story highlights the potential hazards of in-app purchases being left on.

As discussed at different events and at the ‘Meet your iPad sessions, we recommend:

  • students have iTunes accounts without credit cards attached to them (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534); and that
  • restrictions are added to the iPad in keeping with their age
  • restrictions are added with a passcode that is different to the passcode for the iPad
  • restrictions passcodes are not shared in order to keep the restrictions secure

Esafety signposts

Following on from the parent ‘Meet Your iPad’ evening, we handed out an ‘esafety’ signposting sheet to offer help on where to look when it comes  to esafety in the home with all of the different internet enabled devices we have access  to in our homes.

“Children and young people need to be empowered to keep themselves safe…Children will be children – pushing boundaries and taking risks. At a public swimming pool we have gates, put up signs, have lifeguards and shallow ends, but we also teach children how to swim.” – Dr Tanya Byron, author of Safer Children in a Digital World
